Gerflor is committed to sustainable development

Because preserving the environment is one of our concerns, we have made strong commitments through our sustainable development policy entitled "we care/we act"

What is our challenge?
To reduce our carbon impact at all stages of the product life cycle.
What are the results?
Products that meet the highest environmental standards and are manufactured as close as possible to our markets.

20% reduction in kg of CO2 per m2 of product by 2025

First commitment for 2025, we want to drastically reduce our carbon footprint: 20% reduction in kg of CO2 per m2 of product (calculated on scopes 1 & 2 defined in the greenhouse gas protocol).

This objective is in line with the reduction of our carbon emissions: between 2016 and 2019 our emissions have already reduced by 16%.

What is our strategy to achieve this? To limit our carbon footprint at all stages of the product’s life cycle, particularly on raw materials, durability and ease of maintenance.

10% bio-sourced content by 2025

Our bio-based solutions include DLW linoleum (98% natural), Saga cork-backed tiles and Mipolam Symbioz homogeneous floor coverings featuring plasticisers made from cereal crop residue.

We are looking to develop these solutions so that they account for 10% of our business activities by 2025.

30% recycled materials by 2025

On average, our flooring currently contains 25% recycled materials. By 2025 we hope to reach 30%.

The recycled material comes from industrial waste, installation off-cuts or end-of-life products, mainly collected through our Second Life program.

What can we guarantee? That integrating these recycled components in no way reduces the quality and performance of the floor coverings.

35% of looselay products by 2025

We believe that non-adhesive installation represents the future of floor coverings. In addition to offering better indoor air quality, it enables easier and faster installation (saving time and money).

On the environmental side, it saves CO2 from the glue and facilitates recycling at the end of life, avoiding glue residues and patching.

Looselay products now account for 25% of Gerflor's sales. Our ambition is to reach 35% by 2025.

60,000 tonnes of recycled products by 2025

By 2025 we want to recycle 60,000 tonnes of materials per year, compared to 50,000 in 2020.

How do we go about meeting this challenge?

Our two collection channels:

  • Second Life:  Gerflor collection of “clean” installation off-cuts and end-of-life products.
  • PVC Next:  reprocessing of non-standard end-of-life products.

A recycling plant specialising in flexible flooring.

  • Named Floor To Floor, this plant is the result of the co-investment of Gerflor and Paprec, leader in recycling.
  • It sorts the collected off-cuts and transforms them into granules which are then reintegrated into the composition of new Gerflor products.

Gerflor Australasia is also a founding signatory of the ResiLoop recycling program set to launch in 2024.

ResiLoop – Founding Member

ResiLoop is a pioneering initiative that aims to reduce the environmental impact of resilient flooring in Australia, which accounts for about 60,000 tonnes of landfill waste every year, including 9,000 tonnes of unused material. ResiLoop is part of the industry's transition to a circular economy, by addressing the waste problem at the source: the installation process. ResiLoop has been collaborating with stakeholders across the resilient flooring value chain, conducting research, business modelling and field trials to explore different recycling and reverse logistics solutions for both residential and commercial sectors. The outcome of this work is a national scheme that showcases a strong product stewardship approach in Australia.

To reduce our carbon footprint at each stage of our product's life cycle

Stringent product certifications and labels

Our policy in terms of sustainable development has already enabled us to obtain stringent product certifications and labels. These standards recognise our efforts in terms of:

  • floor covering durability: UPEC A+
  • sustainable development: Cradle to Cradle
  • reduction of pollutant emissions: Blue Angel, M1, A+, floor score

Our products also contribute to obtaining environmental standards for buildings: LEED, HQE
